We finally arrived in Nairobi and couldn’t wait for Sunday. As first time hikers Asiya, Ayman and I were pretty excited and were looking forward to new experiences.
The hike started early in the morning on Sunday 17th December and the drive to Castle Forest Lodge was smooth where we managed to witness a beautiful sunrise and as we got closer to the lodge we got our first glance at the majestic Mount Kenya. Soon everyone on the bus was awake and pretty excited.
After a few preliminary stretches we set off on the Kamweti route which is known to be the most scenic route, and it indeed was. We couldn’t get enough of the beauty around us. Mother nature was truly at its best.
The route was slightly ascending as we experienced the beauty of silence and the sounds of nature completely forgetting the world behind us and after some time we reached a bridge which happened to be a beautiful site to click pictures. After getting the perfect shot we continued our way to the Kamweti Falls. The walk to the Waterwall was a bit challenging as the path was muddy and most of us kept slipping but all that was totally worth it but as someone had said, “the best view comes after the hardest climb”. When we got the first glimpse at the falls. We were dumbstruck. It was one of the most beautiful scenes we had witnessed. We couldn’t wait to go down and take a dip in that cascading waterfall.
So down we went with shoes and all and got soaking wet in the freezing water. Multiple pictures were taken and soon it was time to go back and complete the hike, but we just couldn’t get enough of that beautiful waterfall.
We continued our hike steadily and this part was even more scenic than it was before and we were just getting immersed in the nature around us. Finally we reached the campsite where we sat down and re hydrated. We were so exhausted that some of us even managed squeeze in power naps
The hike back was uneventful. Everyone was pretty quiet I guess we felt sad that it was time to go back to the hectic lifestyle that we were used to and couldn’t bear to say goodbye to that peaceful place around us.
We had done it. All 38 of us had managed to finish the hike. Some having had it more difficult while others pretty smoothly. Back in the bus as I rode back home with the moon shining down I realized that this hike was the best part of 2017. It had been a very stressful year with lots of ups and downs. But honestly speaking however stressed one might be if one reconnects with nature he will be stress-free.
Most of us end up spending all our life working and struggling and forget all about outdoors as we are glued to our phones day in day out but all we need is a date with mother nature at least once a month and that is when you can truly feel alive.
As a first time hiker it was the best experiences ever. Trust me, it couldn’t get better than this. I went home taking more that I thought I would be. I had found new friends and reconnected with my old ones all I can say is: Try something new, something different and you may end up loving it.
A new thing I decided to try
What an experience it was..oh my!
The chirping of the birds and the picturesque scenery
And all that greenery
I will remember it forever
As it made my year so much greater
Hiking isn’t just walking. It’is so much more than that.
Thank you so much Women Who Hike – Kenya for letting me have of the best times of my life. I can’t wait to go on more hikes with you and become a permanent member of the group.
